CBD Secretariat Requests Views on ABS

The CBD Secretariat has invited parties, organizations, indigenous and local communities, and stakeholders to submit views and information, in preparation for the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS), and in support of the Protocol's implementation.

16 December 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited parties, organizations, indigenous and local communities (ILCs), and stakeholders to submit views and information on two matters. The first regards preparation for the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the CBD. The second is regarding support of the Protocol’s implementation.

With regard to the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee, to be held from 6-10 June 2010, at a location to be confirmed, parties, organizations, ILCs and stakeholders are invited to provide views, by 15 March 2011, on: the modalities of the ABS Clearing-House; capacity-building measures; awareness-raising measures; and compliance procedures. Developing country parties are further invited to submit information regarding their capacity-building needs by 31 March 2011.

In support of the Protocol’s implementation, parties, organizations, ILCs and stakeholders are invited to submit information on: sectoral and cross-sectoral model contractual clauses for mutually agreed terms; and existing guidelines and codes of conduct on ABS.
