story highlights

The contribution of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) will include actvities held at the Rio Conventions Pavilion, and briefings on the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS).

CBD5 April 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated a notification outlining its contribution to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), including the Rio Conventions Pavilion, briefings on the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS) as an instrument for sustainable development, and the message to be prepared by the CBD Working Group on Review of Implementation (WGRI) on the role of biodiversity for sustainable development.

The CBD Secretariat will brief participants, including legislators, on the Nagoya Protocol on ABS, and will encourage accession and ratification by parties. WGRI, at its fourth meeting to be held in May 2012, will prepare a message for submission to the UNCSD on the role of biodiversity for sustainable development.

The Rio Conventions Pavilion will serve to highlight the importance of the Rio Conventions as agreed frameworks for sustainable development in the context of implementing commitments that will be adopted at Rio+20, and will host a programme of events aligned with the Rio+20 agenda. The Pavilion provides a coordinated platform for awareness raising and information sharing about linkages in science, policy and practice between biodiversity, climate change, and desertification and land degradation. CBD Parties wishing to host events at the Pavilion are invited to submit proposals by 27 April 2012. [CBD Notification][Pavilion Website]
