5 March 2010: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has circulated volume 8 of its “REDD-plus & Biodiversity e-Newsletter,” which includes a call for the poster session organized around the theme “Biodiversity and Climate Change: Achieving the 2020 Targets.” The poster session will take place at the 14th meeting of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), to be held from 10-21 May 2010, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Posters and extended abstracts are being accepted on case studies and best practices on how measures to address climate change and biodiversity loss can be mutually supportive in achieving the new strategic plan of the CBD. Poster forms should be sent to the CBD Secretariat by 12 March 2010.
The newsletter also includes the review of the following publications: “Carbon markets and forest conservation: A review of the environmental benefits of REDD mechanisms” by the UN Environment Programme – World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC); “Promoting biodiversity co-benefits in REDD” by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); “Overview of Readiness for REDD: a compilation of readiness activities prepared on behalf of the Forum on Readiness for REDD,” by the Woods Hole Research Center with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation; “REDD Realities: how strategies to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation could impact on biodiversity and indigenous peoples in developing countries” by the Global Forest Coalition; a recent paper in Conservation Letters on “Opportunities for achieving biodiversity conservation through REDD;” and “The End of the Hinterland: Forests, Conflict and Climate Change” by Right and Resources Initiative.
