15 March 2011: In the February Issue of its Monthly Bulletin, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) highlights several recent activities, including the opening for signature of the Nagoya Protocol.

The Bulletin notes that the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization was opened for signature by CBD parties on 2 February 2011, at UN Headquarters, in New York, US. Colombia was the first country to sign the Protocol, followed by Yemen, Brazil and Algeria.

The Bulletin also reports on: the first country-visit to Rwanda by Edward Norton, UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity; and the CBD Executive Secretary’s visit to Nairobi, Kenya, in February to take part in the 26th session of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC 26/GMEF).

The Bulletin further highlights a workshop on biodiversity and finance, held on 17-18 February, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Country Support Programme, which provided an opportunity, for the first time, to analyze national and regional implications of the major outcomes of the tenth meeting of the CBD Conference of the Parties (COP 10).

Finally, the Bulletin notes that, at ninth meeting of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 9), a subsidiary body of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the CBD Secretariat provided guidance on the relevance of the Nagoya outcomes to the discussions on synergies between the Rio Conventions and harmonized planning and reporting. It also reports on a side event, organized with the Secretariats of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and UNCCD, on cooperation with the private sector.
