19 January 2011: In an effort to enhance synergies between the two processes, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has prepared a notification including invitations for parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to submit their views on areas of potential input of biodiversity considerations into the climate change discussions.

Specific areas for enhanced synergies include, for example: issues relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries under the UNFCCC; mechanisms to streamline reporting and data collection related to the biodiversity and climate change interface at the national and sub-national level; and the role of biodiversity in reducing vulnerability and enhancing adaptation to climate change. The identified invitations for submissions to the UNFCCC address issues related to: enhanced action on adaptation; enhanced action on mitigation, including nationally appropriate mitigation commitments or actions by developed country parties, various approaches, including opportunities for using markets, to enhance the cost-effectiveness of, and to promote, mitigation actions, bearing in mind different circumstances of developed and developing countries, and economic and social consequences of response measures; land use, land-use change and forestry; further guidance for the operation of the Least Developed Countries Fund; and national communications of Annex I parties.
