CBD Invites Nominations for LMO Regional Workshop

The training of trainers workshop for the Central and Eastern European region will focus on the identification and documentation of living modified organisms.

Participants are expected to train and share the knowledge and experience gained with their colleagues at home.

The CBD Secretariat will accept nominations for participants until 11 March 2011 for the April training.

16 February 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited Parties to the Biosafety Protocol to nominate experts for participation in a workshop for the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region. The training of trainers’ workshop will focus on the identification and documentation of living modified organisms (LMOs). It will take place from 11-15 April 2011.

The workshop is directed at customs officers, border control officials, sanitary and phytosanitary inspectors and other enforcement authorities, as well as policy makers and regulators. The objective is to provide an introduction to the Protocol’s requirements regarding LMO identification and documentation, as well as techniques and methodologies that may be used to ensure their implementation.

CEE Parties are invited to nominate one expert per country who has relevant, practical experience in customs control or experience formulating or enforcing regulations or standards for the identification and detection of regulated goods and substances in general, and LMOs in particular. Participants are expected to make use of their acquired knowledge and skills in their current positions and to train and share the knowledge and experience gained with their colleagues at home.
