The purpose of the publication is to provide biodiversity-relevant information to the UNFCCC, and the printed version will be launched at UNFCCC COP 15 in Copenhagen. Main messages focus on: the impacts of climate change on biodiversity; the role of biodiversity in climate change adaptation; the links between biodiversity conservation and sustainable use and climate change mitigation; and ways and means to value biodiversity with regard to climate change responses.
The report is the outcome of scientific and technical deliberations conducted by experts from 23 countries as well as UN, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and indigenous community representatives. The Expert Group held two meetings, in October 2008 in London, UK, and in April 2009, in Helsinki, Finland. [CBD Communiqué ]
