© Ahmed Djoghlaf30 April 2009: At the UN Department of Public Information briefing for non-governmental organizations on “Biodiversity – The basis for Human Well-Being: Celebrating the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010,” held on 30 April 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) highlighted the International Year of Biodiversity as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of life on the planet, recognize its importance for our well-being, and take the steps needed to ensure that it is available for future generations.

He explained that biodiversity provides a range of goods and services that are fundamental to human well-being. He stressed that diverse ecosystems are stronger ecosystems, and better able to withstand the changes that come with disruptions such as those expected to be brought on by climate change. He added that biodiversity, if properly managed, offers pathways for meeting global development challenges, including increasing demands on natural resources, the global food crisis, climate change and the global economic recession. He also stressed that biodiversity loss is not a standalone problem and cannot be tackled through separate initiatives that merely target species loss as an issue separate from poverty, climate change, water scarcity, and the other global challenges.
