22 February 2010: In his statement on the occasion of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Workshop on Journalism and the Environment, which met in Bali, Indonesia, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted the linkages between climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as the potential of ecosystem-based approaches to biodiversity conservation and management for adaptation to climate change.

Djoghlaf drew attention to the report of the second meeting of the CBD Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Climate Change and Biodiversity, which underscores such interlinkages. He also highlighted the process for revising and updating the CBD Strategic Plan, noting that the post-2010 strategic plan is expected to include several key components, including linking action to address biodiversity loss with efforts to combat and adapt to climate change, drawing the links among biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being, and addressing both the direct and indirect drivers of biodiversity loss such as excessive consumption of fossil fuels and meat, as well as environmentally harmful subsidies.
