CBD Executive Secretary Addresses GEF Council Meeting

On the occasion of the 39th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, held from 16-18 November 2010 in Washington DC, US, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted the Nagoya outcomes, in particular decisions related to guidance to the financial mechanism.

GEF16 November 2010: On the occasion of the 39th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council, held from 16-18 November 2010 in Washington DC, US, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted the Nagoya outcomes, in particular decisions related to guidance to the financial mechanism.

Ahmed Djoghlaf drew attention to the successful outcome of the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the CBD, noting in particular: the terms of reference for a full assessment of the amount of funding necessary to assist developing countries in fulfilling their commitments under the Convention for the sixth replenishment period of the GEF Trust Fund; and the adopted guidance to the financial mechanism. He noted that some areas required immediate attention, including on updating national biodiversity strategies and action plans and on development of country-specific resource mobilization strategies.

Djoghlaf also highlighted Japan’s announcement to establish a Nagoya Trust Fund under GEF, to support access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing, as well as technology transfer. [Djoghlaf’s Statement]
