The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced that it is organizing a series of regional capacity-building workshops for Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and the Asia and Pacific regions, aiming to improve the numbers of indigenous and local community (ILC) representatives, with an emphasis on women, and focusing on Article 8(j) (traditional knowledge), 10(c) (customary sustainable use) and the Nagoya Protocol.
29 March 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced that it is organizing a series of regional capacity building workshops for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), Africa, and the Asia and Pacific regions, aiming to improve the numbers of indigenous and local community (ILC) representatives, with an emphasis on women, effectively involved in the CBD processes, as well as to build their capacity to do so.
With financial support from the Governments of Spain and Japan, as well as the GIZ-implemented ABS Capacity Development Initiative, and held in collaboration with regional partners, these workshops will focus on Article 8(j) (traditional knowledge), 10(c) (customary sustainable use) and the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization (ABS). They aim at preparing ILC representatives for the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD, to be held in October 2012, in Hyderabad, India. [CBD Notification]
