iofc5 December 2013: The report of the 2013 Caux Dialogue on Land and Security, a four-day event held to explore the potential for sustainable land management to advance peace, development and climate mitigation, has been released. The Dialogue was convened in Caux, Switzerland in July 2013 by former UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Executive Secretary, Luc Gnacadja, and Chair of the Caux Forum for Human Security, Mohamed Sahnoun.

The report stress that human relationships advanced through multi-stakeholder dialogue are key to rehabilitating land, community and livelihoods, particularly in regions like the Sahel where governments and nomadic communities alike see land degradation as the biggest driver of conflict. According to the report, eight percent of the world’s conflicts occur in drylands where land degradation is most severe.

The report contains quotes and summaries of keynote speakers on holistic approaches to poverty, conflict, and environmental degradation, and success stories from grassroots practitioners working to advance human security through sustainable land management. Presentations from the Dialgoue are also available for download.

The next Caux Dialogue on Land and Security is scheduled to take place from 30 June to 4 July 2014. [UNCCD Press Release] [Caux Press Release] [Publication: 2013 Caux Dialogue on Land and Security] [Caux Dialogue presentations][Land Policy & Practice coverage of Caux Dialogue]
