iucn-fao-iied24 March 2014: In a case study titled ‘Multi-stakeholder Governance Strengthens Sustainable Livelihoods in Bosawas, Nicaragua,’ the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and other partners review stakeholder coordination for forest management in the Bosawas Biosphere Reserve in Nicaragua.

The case study focuses on the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF), which is being piloted in Nicaragua. The FFF is supporting the preservation of the traditional management practices of the indigenous Mayangna’s culture, while simultaneously recognizing the practices and cultures of the mestizos living around the reserve.

The pilot project worked to strengthen the organizational structure and capacity of local and indigenous governments as well as local producer organizations, as well as to provide improved market access and supporting innovative technologies and production approaches. The FFF also aimed to strengthen local governance, particularly within the Cabinet of Production and Trade.

The case study takes particular note of the interventions to bolster women’s organizations and empower women. Such interventions included facilitating exchanges of experiences among Mayangna, Miskita and mestiza women, providing technical support for the production of handicrafts, and linking local women’s organizations with similar organizations from Guatemala and Honduras.

The FFF is managed jointly by FAO, IIED and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). [Publication: Multi-stakeholder Governance Strengthens Sustainable Livelihoods in Bosawas, Nicaragua] [FFF News]
