22 July 2013: The Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) and the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Risoe Centre co-organized a regional workshop in Havana, Cuba, looking at possible Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in the agribusiness and energy sectors of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Caribbean Regional Workshop on Capacity Development and Lessons Learned in Design and Development of NAMAs was held from 3-5 July 2013, in Havana, Cuba.

The workshop was co-hosted by Cuba’s Foreign Ministry (MINCEX) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA). Participants were briefed on the basic components of NAMAs, with focus on their political, regulatory, institutional, operational requirements and possible funding options. Participants analyzed the potential in Caribbean countries for NAMAs in the agribusiness and energy sectors. Workshop organizers also discussed with attending government representatives how NAMAs can help them realize their national sustainable development goals.

In addition to participants from the six Caribbean countries, observers from six Latin American countries attended, as well as representatives from the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Latin American Development Bank (CAF), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and advisers from Argentina, Costa Rica, Peru and Spain.
