Caribbean Wetlands Initiative Discusses Ramsar Convention Implementation

Participants at the second meeting of the Caribbean Wetlands Initiative discussed: the strategic framework document of the Initiative; mechanisms for the preparation of a regional project proposal for its implementation; and the upcoming Pan-American meeting and the Ramsar Convention's COP 11.

13 July 2011: The second meeting of the Caribbean Wetlands Initiative discussed the region’s implementation of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention), and resulted in agreement on activities and material to be presented and disseminated during the upcoming Pan-American meeting and the 11th meeting of the contracting parties (COP 11) to the Ramsar Convention.

The meeting took place in Kralendijk, on the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean, from 4-9 July 2011, and was led by the Governments of Jamaica and Cuba, and supported by the Public Entity of Bonaire, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation of the Caribbean Netherlands and the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention. The meeting brought together delegates from Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname, as well as representatives of the Caribbean Netherlands, Aruba, Curacao, France, and NGOs.

Participants discussed: the strategic framework document of the Caribbean Wetlands Initiative; and mechanisms for the preparation of a regional project proposal for its implementation. They agreed on the type of activities and material to be presented and disseminated during the Pan-American meeting, scheduled to take place in Jamaica, in December 2011, as well at Ramsar COP 11, taking place in Bucarest, Romania, from 19-26 June 2012.
