Caribbean Organizations Discuss Cooperation on Water and Wastewater Issues
story highlights

The Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility's Caribbean Regional Fund for Wastewater Management (GEF-CReW) co-hosted a two-day meeting of over 50 national and regional groups working on water and wastewater management issues in the Caribbean, including on building climate resilience in the Caribbean water sector.

The meeting aimed to improve cooperation and coordination and raise the profile of water/wastewater issues in the region.

unep-cep.gwp.gef-crew29 April 2014: More than 30 national and regional organizations working on water and wastewater issues in the Caribbean met to discuss how to improve cooperation and raise the profile of water and wastewater management in the region.

The Meeting of Regional Partners in the Water and Wastewater Sector took place from 28-29 April 2014, in Barbados.

Meeting participants exchanged information on existing projects, programs and activities in the Caribbean regarding water and wastewater management, such as the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) Consortium on Water, and discussed ways of strengthening and building upon existing initiatives. Participants also identified mechanisms and opportunities for pooling and coordinating tools, resources and projects to maximize water resources management benefits and raise the sector’s profile in the region.

On the second day, a knowledge-sharing session took place to launch and familiarize participants with recently-developed tools in integrated water resources management (IWRM), with emphases on building climate resilience in the Caribbean water sector and improving wastewater management. For example, participants learned about the Caribbean Climate Online Risk and Adaptation Tool (CCORAL)-Water initiative, a joint collaboration between the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) and the CARICOM Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), with financial support from the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN). The Global Environment Facility’s Caribbean Regional Fund for Wastewater Management (GEF-CReW) launched an effluent discharge database and shared a series of materials and videos.

GWP-C, the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (UNEP-CAR/RCU) and GEF-CReW jointly organized and hosted the meeting and knowledge-sharing session. [GEF CReW Press Release] [GEF CReW Press Release on Knowledge-Sharing Session] [GEF CReW Website]
