15 June 2018: The fourth edition of the report titled, ‘Our City: A Peg Report on Sustainability,’ evaluates progress in Winnipeg, Canada, towards “the three pillars of sustainability that are at the foundation of our quality of life” – environmental, economic and social well-being. The report, based on data from the online portal ‘Peg,’ also links the city’s well-being to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Peg was relaunched together with the report.

Compared with data from 2011, the report shows that public transit ridership (SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities) and children in care (SDG 1 on no poverty and SDG 3 on good health and well-being) have declined in Winnipeg. By contrast, Winnipeg has improved in a number of areas, including water use, waste, median household income, and personal safety. High school diploma rates, unemployment rates, and life expectancy for both women and men have remained static since 2011, per the report.

Peg was relaunched on 15 June 2018, with its indicators aligned to the SDGs.

The data used to produce the ‘Our City’ report were drawn from Peg, an online community indicator system (CIS) launched in 2013 by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and United Way of Winnipeg. Meant to track community well-being, the CIS provides a way for individuals, community groups and organizations in all sectors to access data about a particular community. The system provides data to guide decision-making and collective action, supporting progress towards users’ objectives.

Peg was relaunched on 15 June 2018, with its indicators aligned to the SDGs. Although Peg uses language different from that of the SDGs to describe Winnipeg’s community goals, all 55 indicators tracked in Peg fit within the 17 SDGs. Peg’s partners anticipate that aligning Winnipeg’s actions with the SDGs will demonstrate how Winnipeg and other cities can achieve the Global Goals at the local level.
