CAF-Funded Study of Peru’s Hydroelectric Potential Presented
story highlights

The Latin American Development Bank (CAF) is financing a technical study of the potential of Peru's river basins to produce hydropower, with plans to finance similar studies for its other member countries.

5 September 2012: The initial results of a technical study of the hydroelectric power potential of Peru financed by the Latin American Development Bank (CAF) has been presented to this country’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM).

The results of phase one of the “Update Study of Hydroelectric Potential of Peru” was presented to MEM officials in Lima, Peru, on 5 September 2012 by CAF Energy Vice President Hamilton Moss de Souza and the CAF representative in Peru, Eleonora Silva.

The study, performed by US Geological Survey (USGS) specialists, looks at all Peruvian river basins with a view to identifying potential hydropower projects of all scales, from small to large. The presentation to MEM covered the methodology being used and a look at its preliminary results in assessing the potential of the Marañón and Huallaga basins.

Moss de Souza indicated CAF’s interest in financing similar studies for other Bank member countries as a first step to helping them fully tap their hydraulic resources to produce electricity, thereby increasing their energy production without contributing to carbon emissions.
