unep_fi_brazil14 September 2015: Leaders and officials from the Brazilian insurance industry, including insurers, reinsurers and the Brazilian Superintendence of Private Insurance, met to discuss how Brazil can harness the full potential of its insurance market for sustainable development. The ‘Insurance 2030 Brazil Roundtable’ addressed how key stakeholders can develop pathways for action, scale and impact through 2030.

The roundtable, which took place on 14 September 2015, in São Paulo, Brazil, was co-hosted by the Brazilian Insurance Confederation and the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) Initiative. According to UNEP, Brazil is the largest insurance market in Latin America, with about half of the premium volume in the region.

In a speech delivered by video, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres said the insurance industry is leading the way on climate action and stimulating further ambition, and that, more than any other industry, it understands the economic risk associated with climate change. She emphasized collaboration among actors, including insurers, and noted that insurers are best placed in extending the boundaries of insurability and developing solutions to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy.
