Brazil Announces Agreement on Establishing SDGs Working Group

By the draft decision, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) would: decide to establish the OWG in accordance with paragraph 248 of the outcome document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20); and welcome the Group's membership as designated by the five regional groups of UN Member States.

9 January 2013: The Permanent Representative of Brazil has sent a letter to UN Member States regarding an agreement on the establishment of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti wrote that, in a meeting with representatives of the regional groups held on 9 January 2013, agreement was reached on a “simple decision” and a list of the members of the OWG.

By the draft decision, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) would: decide to establish the OWG in accordance with paragraph 248 of the outcome document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20); and welcome the Group’s membership as designated by the five regional groups of UN Member States.

The membership list specifies 70 countries which will hold 30 seats, with many of the seats held by two, three or four countries from the same region. [IISD RS Sources]
