Bioversity Showcases Crop Diversification Practices in Southeast Asia
story highlights

A report published by Bioversity International focuses on how Cambodia, Lao PDR and Viet Nam are using crop diversification to bolster resilience to climate change.

The publication, titled 'Effective Implementation of Crop Diversification Strategies for Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam: Insights from Past Experiences and Ideas for New Research,' aims to fill gaps in current research and inform pilot initiatives to be tested at the sub-national level and possibly scaled up as national programmes.

CGIARJanuary 2015: A report published by Bioversity International focuses on how Cambodia, Lao PDR and Viet Nam are using crop diversification to bolster resilience to climate change. The publication, titled ‘Effective Implementation of Crop Diversification Strategies for Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam: Insights from Past Experiences and Ideas for New Research,’ aims to fill gaps in current research and inform pilot initiatives to be tested at the sub-national level and possibly scaled up as national programmes.

The report, which compiles the results from country desk reviews and an October 2014 workshop, presents the agriculture-based interventions that the three Governments have identified as priorities. In particular, the countries have concentrated on crop diversification as a way to strengthen smallholders’ operations in the face of climate change.

Bioversity International, a member of the CGIAR Consortium, and other partners are working with policymakers in the three countries to effectively implement a policy framework that allows farming communities, especially women, men and ethnic minorities, to carry out crop diversification in the low and upland regions. The desk reviews and workshop studied past and ongoing crop diversification in all three countries.

According to Bioversity International, the programmes, projects and practices detailed in the report are largely being implemented as a result of the strong commitments by the Governments of Cambodia and Lao PDR to integrate climate change mitigation and adaptation into national and sectoral development plans, as well as initiative by the Government of Viet Nam to address adaptation at the national and sub-national levels.

The results achieved by each country thus far are detailed in the report; they range from improved nutrition and reduced poverty to better, more environmentally-friendly pest control and enhanced crop productivity.
