Bioversity International has released the Strategic Action Plan to Strengthen Conservation and Use of Mesoamerican Plant Genetic Resources (PRG) in Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change (SAPM).
SAPM provides a ten-year road map for PGR conservation and use as means to improve food security and realize agricultural adaptation to climate change.
31 March 2014: Bioversity International has released the ‘Strategic Action Plan to Strengthen Conservation and Use of Mesoamerican Plant Genetic Resources (PRG) in Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change’ (SAPM). SAPM provides a ten-year road map for PGR conservation and use as means to improve food security and realize agricultural adaptation to climate change.
Funded through the benefit-sharing fund of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR), SAPM addresses the following six thematic components and activities: conservation; sustainable use; institutions and policies; education and capacity-building; operational frameworks and mechanisms; and financing.
The plan is based on an analysis of ten Mesoamerican crops and wild relatives and their importance for diet diversity, income generation and food security. It was developed with the participation of Mesoamerican ITPGR Parties and aims to improve adaptation to climate change through strengthened capacity for ITPGR implementation.
