Benin, Togo Establish Mono River Basin Authority

The Governments of Benin and Togo have approved the constituting instrument of the Mono River Basin Authority (MBA) at a ministerial meeting held on 4 July 2014, in Cotonou, Benin.

This ministerial was preceded by an expert meeting on 2-3 July, which analyzed and submitted the documents for ministerial approval.

togo-benin15 July 2014: The Governments of Benin and Togo approved the constituting instrument of the Mono River Basin Authority (MBA) at a ministerial meeting held on 4 July 2014, in Cotonou, Benin. This ministerial was preceded by an expert meeting on 2-3 July, which analyzed and submitted the documents for ministerial approval.

The expert meeting was attended by members of the technical committee of the Mono Basin, representatives from civil society, as well as representatives of the Volta River Basin Authority and technical and financial partners.

The ministerial meeting brought together, inter alia, the Environment Minister of Benin and the Rural Equipment Minister of Togo, who aproved: the signature and ratification of the constituting instruments of the MBA; the roadmap for the effective implementation of the MBA; the designation of an interim President of the Ministerial Council of the MBA; the budget for the MBA for 2015; and headquarters aspects of the MBA for five years.

Negotitions to determine which country will host the headquarters of the MBA will continue, while it was agreed that Benin will hold the interim presidency of the MBA to enable the full establishment of the Authority. [GWP Press Release]
