Bangkok Floods a Sign of a Things to Come, UN/ISDR Reports

In order to mitigate flooding risks, UN/ISDR and the World Bank stress the need for investments in flood protection, improved drainage, flood barriers, as well as improved retention areas.

Bangkok is a member of UN/ISDR's “Making Cities Resilient.” The maintenance of critical infrastructure to reduce the risk of disaster, is among the ten essential actions promoted by the Campaign.

3 January 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has stated that the recent flooding in Bangkok, Thailand, may be a sign of things to come “amid a changing climate.” Drawing on information from the World Bank, UN/ISDR stated that the economic loss caused by the flooding is estimated to be in excess of US$45 billion.
