Azerbaijan, Georgia Make Progress Towards the Joint Sustainable Management of Kura River

As an element of a joint project between the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), representatives from Azerbaijan and Georgia convened to negotiate elements of a draft agreement on the sustainable management of the Kura River basin.

unece-osce1 May 2013: As an element of a joint project between the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), representatives from Azerbaijan and Georgia convened to negotiate elements of a draft agreement on the sustainable management of the Kura River basin.

The meeting took place on 30 April 2013, in Tbilisi, Georgia. The draft agreement includes provisions on: the establishment of a joint commission for the protection and rational use of the Kura River water resources; the prevention of water pollution; the conservation of biodiversity; the sharing of information; and public participation.

The project, under the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC), is designed to improve the implementation of the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention). [UNECE Press Release]
