An online consultation is gathering ideas for innovative approaches to partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region, including the use of science, technology and information-sharing tools.

1 November 2016: An online consultation is open for stakeholders to contribute views on innovative approaches to partnership, and how partnerships can use science, technology, and innovation-sharing tools for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The consultation is taking place ahead of an Expert Group Meeting for the Asia-Pacific region, being organized by the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the UN Office for Partnerships.

The EGM is titled ‘Developing Partnerships for the SDGs in Support of the Reviews of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF),’ and will address, in particular: innovative approaches of partnerships tackling the SDGs; governance models of partnerships, including accountability and stakeholder engagement; ways to create enabling environments at the country level for fostering effective partnerships; and partnership engagement with the 2030 Agenda follow-up and review processes. These four topics also comprise the sections of the online consultation. The EGM will convene in Bangkok, Thailand, on 28 November, during ESCAP’s ‘SDG Week.’

PIFS is finalizing a Pacific SDGs Roadmap, to guide countries in implementing the 2015 agreements on sustainable development and climate change.

Also in the Asia-Pacific region, DESA, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) co-hosted a workshop in Fiji on ‘Effective Partnerships and Financing for the SDGs,’ bringing together technical advisors from ministries of planning and finance. Andie Fong Toy, PIFS, reported that PIFS is currently finalizing a Pacific SDGs Roadmap, to guide countries in implementing the 2015 agreements on sustainable development and climate change. She called for their coherent implementation to avoid fragmentation of efforts, and she highlighted Pacific nations’ efforts to integrate the SDGs into national plans and budgets.
