ASEM to Hold First Ministerial Conference on Energy Security
story highlights

March 2009: The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), an informal process of dialogue and cooperation bringing together the 27 EU member States and the European Commission with 16 Asian countries and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Secretariat, is organizing the First ASEM Ministerial Conference on Energy Security, to be held from 17-18 June 2009, in Brussels, Belgium.

ASEM acknowledges that this grouping includes countries whose energy consumption is foreseen to grow dramatically over the coming years and ASEM partners share many concerns about access to energy resources. The Conference aims to discuss and identify convergent positions on: energy security, including the transparency and effective functioning of global energy markets and the issue of nuclear safety; energy investments; opportunities and methods of promoting sustainable energy diversification, including renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and energy savings; energy technology cooperation through technology transfer, R&D and capacity building (including near-zero emissions power generation from fossil fuels); and trade-related energy issues.
