4 July 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Argentina has designated Palmar Yatay as its 20th wetland of international importance.

The site is composed mainly of permanent and seasonal rivers, streams and creeks, permanent and seasonal freshwater marshes and pools and their surrounding lands. It provides the habitat for four endemic fish families and ten endemic plant species, and sustains a significant proportion of native fish species. The site includes the National Park El Palmar and the Private Reserve La Aurora del Palmar. Both areas promote education, research and tourism activities. Main adverse factors to the wetland include: invasive plant and animal species; the advancement of the agricultural frontier; and poaching and habitat loss.

Argentina’s designation contributes to one of the goals contained in the Ramsar Convention’s Strategic Plan for 2009-2015, which is to reach a protected area of 250 million hectares by 2015. [Ramsar Press Release]
