Arab-speaking Countries to Cooperate on Chemicals and Wastes Conventions Implementation

The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Secretariat), together with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Africa (ROA), convened a regional workshop on enhancing national cooperation and coordination for the implementation of the Conventions for Arab-speaking countries, from 10-12 September 2013, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Basel-Rotterdam-Stockholm18 September 2013: The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Secretariat), together with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office for Africa (ROA), convened a regional workshop on enhancing national cooperation and coordination for the implementation of the Conventions for Arab-speaking countries.

The workshop, which took place from 10-12 September 2013, in Nairobi, Kenya, identified elements of, and a structure for, the national coordination of chemicals and wastes management. Participants also identified gaps and challenges for effective national cooperation and coordination, and agreed on recommendations for how to address them. Participants agreed to use the recommended activities as elements for a project proposal to be submitted to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) or other donors to support strengthening of national coordination and collaboration on the implementation of the three Conventions at national level.

The workshop was attended by 23 representatives from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Sudan, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Yemen, as well as representatives from the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in Kuwait. [IISD RS Sources]
