app20 August 2015: The Africa Progress Panel (APP) has released its annual flagship publication, the Africa Progress Report (APR) 2015, titled ‘Power, People, Planet: Seizing Africa’s Energy and Climate Opportunities.’ The APP consists of ten distinguished individuals from the private and public sector who advocate for equitable and sustainable development for Africa, and is chaired by Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General.

Drawing on research and analysis on Africa, APR 2015 makes policy recommendations for African political leaders and civil society. The report also highlights critical steps that must be taken by leaders in the international public and private sector.

The publication explores the links among energy, poverty and climate change, documenting the risks that would come with a business-as-usual approach. It explains how a “triple win” for Africa could be achieved as renewable technologies create opportunities to increase agricultural productivity, improve resilience to climate change and contribute to long-term reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The report consists of three main sections. The first section addresses Africa’s energy imperative, including the region’s untapped energy potential and its energy transformation. The second section focuses on Africa’s opportunity to lead on climate, including the region’s stake in the global deal, international action and priorities for the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 21) in Paris, France, and securing a better deal for Africa. The third section outlines the road ahead and provides recommendations to African leaders, international community, and private investors and multinational companies.
