story highlights

The app aims to help achieve SDG target 11.1 on ensuring access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production).

It helps users overcome social, economic, cultural and environmental challenges in project implementation, and helps non-practitioners understand basic concepts of sustainable housing construction.

7 November 2018: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the One Planet Network have launched an app to help improve the sustainability of new housing projects and increase the affordability of green housing. The SHERPA for Sustainable Housing Projects app was developed with the recognition that housing is an essential component of sustainable urbanization, an economic driver of cities and a fundamental human right.

The app aims to help achieve SDG target 11.1 on ensuring access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production). It also:

  • helps users overcome social, economic, cultural and environmental challenges in project implementation;
  • uses simple language and can be deployed in remote locations; and
  • enables non-practitioners to understand basic concepts of sustainable housing construction.

SHERPA was developed in partnership with members of the Global Network of Sustainable Housing, which includes Cambridge University, the Technical Research Centre of Finland and UN-Habitat, among others. The app has been tested by Architecture Sans Frontieres in Nepal, Yaam International in Burkina Faso, the Kenyan Slum Upgrading Programme and the EcoSur Network.
