AMCOW6 June 2013: Highlighting the challenges Africa faces to meet the growing demand for safe water and adequate sanitation, the Eleventh Session of the African Ministerial Conference on Water (AMCOW) Executive Committee (ExCo) concluded with a call for a separate water and sanitation goal in the post-2015 development agenda.

Setting a target date of 2030 for achieving the goal, the ExCo urged that the goal include: achieving universal access to safe water and improved hygiene and sanitation in Africa; increasing the harvest potential for productive use of African water resources to 40%; and ensuring and safeguarding water quality.

Meeting in Cairo, Egypt, on 6 June 2013, the ExCo also discussed, inter alia, models for raising the profile of water at country levels, and a South African model on partnerships for sustainable water resources management. [AMCOW Press Release]
