story highlights

The eight member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) discussed possible elements for an Amazonian Cooperation Platform on the environment that will be presented to ACTO's Amazonian Cooperation Council in October.

ACTO2 September 2011: The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) held a meeting from 31 August-1 September 2011, in Brasilia, Brazil, to discuss areas for future cooperation and common action under ACTO’s environment agenda, including the participation of its eight member countries in the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20).

The ACTO Permanent Secretariat presented its proposal for an Amazonian Cooperation Platform on the environment, while delegations explained the environmental policy making process and institutions in their countries and outlined their priorities for Amazonian cooperation on the environment. The Secretariat was asked to present a revised proposal, taking into account input from delegations, at the Amazonian Cooperation Council (CCA) meeting in October. The CCA, composed of high-level diplomats from member countries, recommends action for ACTO’s top decision-making body, the Meeting of Foreign Ministers. [ACTO Press Release]
