AgWA Meeting Discusses Agricultural Water Management

The Partnership for Agricultural Water for Africa (AgWA) Steering Committee and Partners Meeting took place recently to review AgWA activities from 2012-2013 and discuss activities for the period 2014-2015 and agree on how to move forward.

The partnership met from 19-20 March 2014, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together partner organizations, including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

FAO20 March 2014: The Partnership for Agricultural Water for Africa (AgWA) Steering Committee and Partners Meeting took place recently to review AgWA activities from 2012-2013 and discuss activities for the period 2014-2015 and agree on how to move forward.

The partnership met from 19-20 March 2014, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, bringing together partner organizations including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), WaterNet, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), the Regional Association for Irrigation and Drainage in West Africa (ARID), the EU, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and CARE International.

The meeting agreed on 2014-2015 activities, including: support to the pre- and post-Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) compact process for improved agricultural water management (AWM) in Egypt, Malawi, Sudan and Swaziland; support for AWM in the horn of Africa through AgWA in Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda; support for sustainable AWM and the pre- and post-CAADP compact process in Burkina Faso, Morocco and Uganda; and assessment of the impact of AWM projects funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The meeting also discussed cooperative agreements for the implementation, inter alia, of: AgWA work with ARID and CILSS on a proposal on knowledge-sharing to be funded by the World Bank; AgWA work with CARE International on production of a Biannual publication on the state of the art of AWM in Africa; and AgWA leadership in creation of a taskforce of partners to implement decisions taken at the Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Workshop on Addressing the Challenges of Water Scarcity in East Africa and Strengthening Resilience to Drought.

AgWA was established in 2010 to bring together governments, donors, international, regional and national organizations, and civil society to generate support for AWM in Africa. [FAO Press Release] [FAO AgWA Project Information]
