MRV27 March 2015: The Third African Regional Workshop, titled ‘Technical Training on National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventories and Developing GHG Reporting Programmes’ and hosted by the International Partnership on Mitigation and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV), brought together participants from Angola, Egypt, the Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The workshop, which took place in Windhoek, Namibia, from 24-27 March 2015, comprised a three-day technical training on national GHG inventories and a one-day workshop on developing GHG reporting programmes. Technical training on national GHG inventories encouraged the use of the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines as well as the IPCC Inventory Software. During the training, participants were divided into two working groups, with one working group focusing on industrial processes and product use, energy and waste, and the other on agriculture, forestry and other land uses. The training was conducted by five trainers from the Technical Support Unit (TSU) for the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI).

The fourth day of the workshop was dedicated to developing GHG reporting programmes, and aimed to help participants achieve a better understanding of GHG reporting programmes, highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement during programme development and implementation phases. The workshop was conducted by a representative from the World Resources Institute (WRI).

The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV was launched in the framework of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in May 2010 in Bonn, Germany, by South Africa, South Korea and Germany. The overall aim of the Partnership is to support a practical exchange on mitigation-related activities and MRV between developing and developed countries in order to help close the global ambition gap.
