1 June 2010: Heads of State and Government from the African continent, representatives of international institutions and European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs took part in the 25th Africa-France Summit, which convened from 31 May-1 June 2010, in Nice, France.
The Summit addressed the theme “climate and development,” under which participants discussed cooperation in preparation for the Cancun Climate Change Conference at the end of 2010, including reconciling climate change with development, poverty reduction and food security. In addition, among economic themes, the Summit addressed corporate environmental responsibility and energy sources in Africa.
Piebalgs underscored that the Summit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss shared challenges and define common solutions in the framework of the broader Africa-EU Strategic Partnership, supporting a more significant role for Africa on the global scene to better address the challenges of governance, peace and security, and climate change. On the occasion of the Summit, Piebalgs also held bilateral meetings with African Heads of State and the Chair of the African Union (AU) in preparation for the upcoming EU-Africa Summit, scheduled to take place on 29-30 November 2010, which is expected to adopt an action plan for the 2011-2013 period.
