The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced it is providing technical assistance and grant funding for solar panel components for the Boni Tunnel lighting project that will generate 6,648 kilowatt hours per year, covering 19% of the total tunnel power demand and result in 51% energy savings.
16 May 2012: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced it is providing technical assistance and grant funding for lithium ion batteries and other materials needed for solar panel installation to illuminate a major thoroughfare in Manila, the Philippines.
According to the ADB, the Boni Tunnel lighting project is a public private partnership between the Philippines Government, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Mandaluyong City, PNOC Renewables Corporation, and Philips Electronics and Lighting Inc. According to the ADB, the solar panels can generate 6,648 kilowatt hours per year and cover 19% of the total tunnel power demand, resulting in 51% energy savings.
ADB is supporting the Philippines’ government’s overall energy-efficiency and conservation program through a US$31.1 million loan approved in 2009 that has helped retrofit select government buildings and public areas with energy-efficient light systems. The loan has also financed a large-scale exchange of incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps for residential users. [ADB Press Release]
