ADB22 August 2013: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has spotlighted the potential for the use of inland waterways, such as rivers and canals for transport, as a means of decreasing road traffic, accidents and pollution while increasing cross-border trade.

According to ADB, despite the presence of rivers and canals in the region, the lack of dedicated transport policies and investments means this potential resource remains largely underdeveloped.

The ADB argues that to develop or redevelop Asia’s inland water transport potential, investments are required in navigation, vessels, information and communications technologies, and training. ADB also calls for policies and institutions to “make room” for inland waterway transport in the region. [ADB Press Release]
