16 June 2011: The Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) launched a toolkit that aims to provide a practical “how-to” guide to assist countries in the accreditation process for their national implementing entity (NIE) for the Adaptation Fund.

The launch took place during a side event held during the 24th meeting of the Subsidiary Bodies of the UNFCCC in Bonn, Germany, on 15 June 2011. This toolkit includes a number of tools for nominated/interested entities to use when starting the accreditation process for a NIE, including forms, practical case studies and step-by step-assistance to support a successful conclusion to the accreditation process. This toolkit is primarily intended for use by: designated authority; potential NIEs; government officials; civil society; and UN agencies that assist with dissemination of information on the accreditation process.

The side event focused on the key achievements of the Adaptation Fund over the past year and lessons learned regarding the design process, accreditation of National Implementing Entities, and collaboration with civil society. A presentation on the project cycle noted the decision to temporarily set a funding cap of $10 million per country. The AFB noted that three national and eight multilateral entities have been accredited to date. On civil society engagement, the emerging Adaptation Fund NGO network that will target local NGOs, and the open access to board meetings were highlighted.
