Adaptation and Loss and Damage Update: UNFCCC, UNDP Enhance NAPs Support

The UNFCCC Least Developed Countries (LDCs) Expert Group (LEG) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) have ramped up their support for developing countries’ national adaptation plans (NAPs).

The LEG conducted a Regional NAP Expo in Kampala, Uganda, on 28 June 2017.

It also convened a regional training workshop on NAPs for the Pacific region in Nadi, Fiji, from 10-13 July 2017.

13 July 2017: The UNFCCC Least Developed Countries (LDCs) Expert Group (LEG) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) have ramped up their support for developing countries’ national adaptation plans (NAPs).

The LEG conducted a Regional NAP Expo in Kampala, Uganda, on 28 June 2017, that sought to enhance collaboration between government representatives and various partners and stakeholders. The Regional NAP Expo convened as part of the 11th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA11).

The Regional NAP Expo convened as part of the 11th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA11), which took place in Kampala from 26-29 June 2017. Organized by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) and local partners, the event aimed to enhance the capacity of stakeholders to work together to improve the livelihoods of those most vulnerable to climate change. As part of its work programme for 2016-2017, the LEG convened a regional training workshop on NAPs for the Pacific region in Nadi, Fiji, from 10-13 July 2017. Designed to help countries to advance their formulation and implementation of NAPs, the workshop aimed to, inter alia: support countries in designing assessments of climate risk and vulnerability leading to the identification of adaptation priorities; provide technical guidance and support on the design of NAPs implementation; enhance countries’ capacity to access Green Climate Fund (GCF) funding for the formulation of NAPs; provide a platform for countries to share experiences and lessons learned; and promote South-South and regional cooperation. UNDP stepped up its support for countries engaged in the preparation of their NAPs by working with governments, civil society and stakeholders, as well as through programmes, including the joint UNDP-UN Environment National Adaptation Plan Global Support Programme (NAP-GSP), funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF); and the Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans (NAP-Ag) collaborative programme between UNDP and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).
