ABS Protocol Reaches 67 Signatures, Gabon the First to Ratify

Djibouti, Benin and Argentina signed the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in October and November, and on 11 November Gabon became the first country to ratify.

The Protocol will enter into force 90 days after deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification.

CBD16 November 2011: The number of signatories to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reached 67, following signatures by Argentina, Benin and Djibouti. In addition, Gabon recently became the first country to ratify the Protocol.

Djibouti signed on 19 October, Benin on 28 October and Argentina on 15 November 2011. On 11 November 2011, Gabon became the first country to ratify. The Protocol will enter into force 90 days after deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification.
