10YFP22 October 2015: The Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) Programme of the UN 10-Year Framework for Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP) was launched during the Milan Expo 2015.

The SFS Programme is a multi-stakeholder initiative that seeks to accelerate the shift towards more sustainable food systems. The co-leaders of the initiative are the Government of Switzerland, the Government of South Africa and Hivos.

On the occasion of the launch, the organizers noted that, while “food systems are the basis of our food security,” they also exert pressure on natural resources. The SFS Programme will seek to promote sustainability along the food chain, from production to consumption, through activities addressing awareness raising, capacity development, facilitation of access to knowledge and information, and strengthening partnerships. The SFS Programme will seek to contribute towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets related to food and agriculture.

The SFS Programme was developed through coordination with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and an agri-food expert group, and will be implemented over the next seven years. The launch event involved a two-day meeting of members of the Multi-stakeholder Advisory Committee (MAC), from 21-22 October 2015.

Expo Milano 2015 is focused on the theme of “Feeding the planet, energy for life.” [IISD RS sources][10YFP on SCP Sustainable Food Systems Programme webpage]
