unep-10ypf12 November 2015: The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Mogens Lykketoft, has submitted a draft decision to the UNGA regarding the membership of the Board of the ten-year framework of programmes (10YFP) on sustainable consumption and production patterns (SCP). The ten country members are: Albania, Argentina, Germany, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Republic of Korea, Romania and Turkey.

The 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) adopted the 10YFP as a global framework of action to accelerate the shift to SCP in developed as well as developing countries. The 10YFP aims to scale up SCP and resource efficiency initiatives, and decouple environmental degradation from economic growth. There are six programmes operating under the 10YFP, on: consumer information; sustainable lifestyles and education; sustainable public procurement; sustainable buildings and construction; sustainable tourism, including ecotourism; and sustainable food systems.

In a letter to UN Member States, Lykketoft said the 10YFP Board selection is based on consultations within the UN’s five regional groups, each of which could nominate two members to serve on the board.

Per the draft resolution, five members are re-nominated for a second two-year term. According to the Board’s terms of reference, members are eligible for re-nomination for one additional two-year term to ensure continuity in the work of the Board. The 2015-2017 Board would replaces the previous Board, which was composed of Chile, Bangladesh/Indonesia, Finland/Germany, Japan/Republic of Korea, Mexico, Romania, the Russian Federation, South Africa, Switzerland and Tanzania. The new Board members would serve until 15 September 2017.
