World Soil Day has been commemorated annually since 2013, following the adoption of a Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Council resolution calling on the wider UN System to recognize 5 December as World Soil Day and to institutionalize its observance. The resolution was subsequently adopted by the 68th UN General Assembly. World Soil Day 2016 will feature celebrations at global, regional and national levels under the theme of ‘Soils and pulses, a symbiosis for life'.
