The 29th session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will address, among other items, a consolidated document relating to intellectual property and genetic resources, and joint recommendations, submitted by member countries, on genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, and the use of databases for the defensive protection of genetic resources and traditional knowledge. A half-day panel on 15 February will share indigenous and local community perspectives on intellectual property, genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge. According to the mandate agreed upon by the 2015 WIPO General Assembly, the IGC will focus on reaching a common understanding on core issues, including definition of misappropriation, beneficiaries, subject matter, objectives, and what traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions subject matter is entitled to protection at an international level, including consideration of exceptions and limitations and the relationship with the public domain.
