High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda

UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Peter Thomson will convene this High-level Meeting to discuss the effective implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the positioning of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), as called for in the New Urban Agenda adopted at the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III). The New Urban Agenda also calls for the UN Secretary-General to submit to a report on the effectiveness, efficiency, accountability and oversight of UN-HABITAT, including its mandate, governance structure, work and financial capabilities. The UNGA event is expected to bring together mayors, community administrators, city resilience leaders, and other stakeholders to focus on implementation of SDG 11 and to discuss the Secretary-General's report.

The meeting will discuss, inter alia, best practices, success stories in relation to implementation of the New Urban Agenda. It will also address the measures contained in the Report from the Secretary General’s Independent Panel to Assess, Enhance Effectiveness of UN-Habitat after Adoption of New Urban Agenda, which was summarized here.
