UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Peter Thomson will convene this High-level Meeting to discuss the effective implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the positioning of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), as called for in the New Urban Agenda adopted at the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III). The New Urban Agenda also calls for the UN Secretary-General to submit to a report on the effectiveness, efficiency, accountability and oversight of UN-HABITAT, including its mandate, governance structure, work and financial capabilities. The UNGA event is expected to bring together mayors, community administrators, city resilience leaders, and other stakeholders to focus on implementation of SDG 11 and to discuss the Secretary-General's report. In April 2017 a high-level panel was announced to provide an assessment and recommendations for the future of UN-Habitat. In June 2017, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed reported that the panel met twice and consulted with governments, stakeholders, and UN agencies to inform its assessment and recommendations, followed by a third meeting on 14-15 June. The deadline for the Panel to submit its report is 30 July 2017, Mohammed said.
