The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is organizing a conference, titled ‘From Exclusion to Empowerment: The Role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for Persons with Disabilities'. The conference aims to promote the human rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities and to encourage concrete measures for empowering disabled persons through the use of ICTs. The conference will also: provide assistance to UNESCO Member States in implementing their commitments on the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities and ICTs; share good practices and encourage dialogue among those working in the disability field; promote the application of affordable and accessible ICTs for people with disabilities; and propose an action plan and recommendations to improve the status quo of people with disabilities on the role of ICTs in increasing access to education, job opportunities, public information and social services. The event will include plenary and breakout parallel sessions as well as a film festival and exhibition.
