UNEP Intergovernmental Meeting on Minerals and Metals: Western European and Other States Group Regional Meeting

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will convene a Western European and Other States Group Regional Meeting ahead of the UNEP Intergovernmental Meeting on Minerals and Metals. The Regional Meeting will bring together member States and national focal points, and representatives of international organizations and other multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) to discuss topics related to minerals and mining. The regional meeting will feature a one-day technical workshop and a day of intergovernmental discussions.

This meeting is one in a series of two-day intergovernmental regional consultations that will focus on stocktaking existing actions to enhance the environmental sustainability of minerals and metals and consider the implementation of the UN Environment Assembly’s (UNEA) resolution on mineral resource governance (UNEP/EA.4/Res.19). They will address the topic of sand and sustainability, including policies on the environmentally sound extraction and use of sand, and the topic of tailings management. National focal points will share opportunities for enhanced international cooperation in the mining sector.

Regional consultations for the Eastern European Group of States, the Western European and Other States Group, the Latin American and Caribbean States Group, the Asia Pacific States Group, and the African States Group will be held between April and September 2023. In September, the Global Intergovernmental Meeting on Minerals and Metals will highlight key findings from regional consultations.
