Transport Day 2013

Organized by the Partnership on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport and the Bridging the Gap Initiative, Transport Day 2013 will convene during the 19th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 19) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), land transport is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to 13% of global emissions and 23% of all energy-related emissions. The Day aims to: demonstrate the contribution that transport can make to mitigation and adaptation, specifically in the context of sustainable development; promote the integration of transport into policy making on climate change under the UNFCCC; and ensure that modalities for financing, capacity building and technology transfer under the UNFCCC are appropriate for the transport sector. The event will address such issues as: the mitigation potential of the transport sector; policy making on sustainable, low carbon transport in the developing world; ensuring effective nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) on transport; integrating adaptation into transport policies; and financing sustainable, low-carbon transport. Transport Day 2013 is expected to conclude with the adoption of the 'Warsaw Statement on Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport,' which will contain recommendations on how to strengthen the integration of sustainable, low-carbon transport in the UNFCCC process, particularly the new global agreement on climate change. SLoCaT is a Type II Partnership under the UN. It is hosted by UN-DESA. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) act as regional focal points.
