Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World (SW4SW)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), together with its Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries (ACSFI) and in collaboration with partners, is organizing the Global Meeting ‘Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World’ (SW4SW).

Partner organizations include the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade (FAST), the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the World Bank (WB) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Participants will discuss the societal benefits from sustainable wood value chains and the challenges that hamper the realization of their full contribution to sustainable development. Focus will be given to the business model of sustainable wood production, with an emphasis on the linkages between sustainable forest management, value chains, livelihoods, investments and financing mechanisms. FAO aims to engage state and non-state actors in a global debate on strategies and actions to raise awareness, trigger policies and increase investments to strengthen sustainable wood production and consumption. One expected outcome from the event is a set of agreed-upon conclusions to feed into other policy dialogues. This will help to ensure the full realization of socio-economic and environmental benefits of sustainable wood and its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
